Get ready to be captivated by the dark side of reality shows. Actress Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut film, Woman of the Hour is finally hitting the OTT platform this week on Lionsgate Play, after making its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023. The crime thriller drama is based on the true story of the serial killer Rodney Alcala and his 1978 appearance on the television show, The Dating Game, during his murder spree.
The English crime thriller film, Woman of the Hour is set to release on November 29, 2024, on Lionsgate Play, which you will also be able to watch through OTTplay Premium. Apart from directing the film, Anna Kendrick essays the role of Sheryl Bradshaw, along with Daniel Zovatto, who played the titular role of Rodney Alcala.
The story kicks off with the introduction of Sheryl Bradshaw, a single woman who is desperately searching for a husband. She joins the popular television shows for a suitor. She meets Rodney Alcala, a very charming man. Sheryl soon chooses him as her potential partner. However, what Sheryl does not know is that Rodney Alcala is hiding some dark secrets. Behind his friendly face, he is a dangerous man who has murdered several innocent people.
The real-life serial killer Rodney Alcala was sentenced for the murder of five women in 1977 and 1979. But many people believe that he actually killed more people. When the police arrested him, they found thousands of photos of women and young girls. The photos portrayed disturbing elements, and they depicted that those women were sexually abused.
In those photographs, only two women were identified. Despite winning a date with Sheryl Bradshaw in the 1978 television show, their interactions were reportedly strained, with her describing him as ‘creepy’. This rejection is reported to have pushed him to kill three more women later.
While talking to Variety, actress Anna Kendrick shared that directing a film like Women of the Hour required more vulnerability than releasing her memoir. While shooting, she felt like every scene of the film was like dealing with her own terrors. When she was asked why she chose this film as her directorial debut, Anna calmly shared that Women of the Hour needed her to show vulnerability which attracted her. She could relate to the real-life stories and incidents and for her the script made her feel very personal.
