Woman of the Hour, starring Anna Kendrick, explores the terrifying true story of Sheryl Bradshaw, an aspiring actress who seeks love on a dating program in the 1970s. Her search for love takes a terrifying turn when she crosses paths with the charismatic but infamous serial killer Rodney Alcala (Daniel Zovatto). The mastermind behind this horrifyingly twisted story, Kendrick, deftly brings Sheryl's terrifying journey to life in her directorial debut.

Exploring the decision to direct a dark crime thriller

Reflecting on her decision to launch her directing career with a sombre crime thriller like Woman of the Hour, the actor revealed that it's funny; she had another director friend read the script, and he said something along the lines of that he is happy she is going to direct, but he confessed that he is surprised that this is what Kendrick is drawn to… He recognizes that the film explores numerous intriguing themes related to being a woman in the world and the challenges that accompany it. Additionally, he brought up the brutality of the opening scene.

Therefore, Kendrick needed some time to reflect on the situation. Ultimately, she expressed that she understands why a violent film may not be her preference, but she can relate to the experience of being in a relationship when one suddenly realizes they are with someone who poses a serious threat to their safety. How terrifying it is to feel completely destroyed in a space that was once cozy and welcoming! Violence—or the fear of violence—in those scenarios doesn't seem out of place to her. To be more specific, the actor had to battle for that opening scene. Some sought an alternative introduction. Despite the fact that most people know Kendrick for her comedy roles, she felt a strong emotional connection to that scene. Therefore, the actor understands how the scene could appear unexpected, but she personally felt a strong connection to the subject matter.

Daniel Zovatto's research into Rodney Alcala's psyche

While discussing his role as a serial killer, Zovatto mentioned in his research that one of the things he found fascinating about Rodney was that many people who commit heinous crimes typically come from broken families. According to the findings, Rodney had a typical upbringing. It was widely anticipated that he would pursue this course of action, and everyone was taken aback. As a result, the actor worked hard to convey that in the film. The character aspired to experience power and become as holy as the deity God permitted. Rodney took the lives of some of his victims as a demonstration of his desire to become a powerful man. This meant he could be more extroverted and charming with her, a trait that unnerved Zovatto. The Dating Game showcases the serial killer's charisma, despite his FBI-wanted appearance. His ego was such that it bordered on narcissism.

Kendrick noted when discussing Zovatto's character that Rodney seemed like an impossible ask—a demanding character, it is. She turned on Station 11 and shouted "Him" the second the actor appeared on TV. He must be the one; she assumed she would be left without a film if he couldn't make it. Kendrick confessed that Zovatto was even better than she had imagined. His frightening intensity in certain instances contrasted with his incredibly sensitive and safe demeanor in others, and she couldn't get over it. She said that the actor is skilled at balancing explosiveness and control; it's just superb.
