Will Indraneil Sengupta play a cop in Bratya Basu’s next gangster movie?

Bratya Basu takes his time to make his films. After Dictionary with Bangladeshi actor Mosharaf Karim, Abir Chatterjee, and Nusrat Jahan, the filmmaker-playwright is busy with his political thriller based on the life of gangster Hubba Shyamal. Mosharaf will also be part of the film. Now it has been reported that Indraneil Sengupta might play a key character in the film. 

According to Bratya, this will be his homage to the gangster films he has watched. He has also refused to label it as a biopic. “Hubba is a noted gangster from Hooghly. This is not a biopic, but rather a deconstruction. This is my homage to all the gangster films I have watched. I want Mosaraf Karim in the movie. There is also an investigator, and the film is about the tussle between them,” he told Ei Samay. 

Bratya had earlier expressed his wish to cast Dev for the investigator’s role. But after discussions between the two, that proposition did not work out. Later, Mandaar-fame Debasish Mondal was offered the role. At one point, Jisshu U Sengupta was almost finalised when the actor’s commitment to a South film upset the plan. Jisshu’s makeup and looks in the South film did not match the character in Bratya’s character. After some consideration, Jishu also did not work out for the project. 

Now it has been reported that Indraneil Sengupta will be seen as the investigator. However, neither the director nor the actor has confirmed the news. The film is set to hit the floors by next month. 

Indraneil started his second innings in the Bengali film industry in 2022. After working on a series of Bengali films, Indtraneil took a break from Kolkata and settled in Mumbai. His film Torulotar Bhut was released earlier this year. Then he was roped in as Feluda in Sandip Ray’s Hatyapuri. He is scheduled to work with Isha Saha once again in a movie directed by Sudeshna Roy and Abhijit Guha. Besides, he teamed up with Ritwick Chakraborty in a period piece, Porichoy Gupta. With his contemporaries like Jisshu, Abir Chattopadhyay, Parambrata Chatterjee, and others getting busy with works outside Bengal, Indraneil is happily juggling his commitments in Mumbai and Kolkata.
