It's no joke to produce a period drama with a budget of over Rs 300 crore, featuring some of the most prominent faces in Indian cinema amidst the pandemic. The team behind SS Rajamouli's RRR pulled it off, however, amid many obstacles. The film, produced by DVV Danayya, starring Jr NTR, Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt in lead roles was to release for Sankranti 2021 initially and was pushed for an October 13 release later. The team couldn't go ahead with the release schedule on both occasions. Now, the makers are planning to release RRR in the initial months of 2022.

Clarifying the reason behind the multiple postponements, the makers released a statement today. "Post production nearly done to have #RRRMovie ready by October’21. But as known to many, we are postponing the release but cannot announce a new date with theatres indefinitely closed. We will release at the earliest possible date when the world cinema markets are up and running," an official update from RRR team's social media handles was out. This statement makes it obvious that team RRR is ready to play the waiting game, given the huge investments they need to recover to enter into the profit zone.

While RRR will need world cinema markets to function in full capacity, it's hard to arrive at a particular date or time at which this is expected to happen, given medicos and researchers have already revealed that we have to survive with the COVID-19 virus for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, the situation remains extremely delicate for the producers and distributors, given the huge sum of interest they need to pay financiers till the film releases. The film's distributor, Jayantilal Gadha of Pen Studios, had also recently reiterated that RRR will only release in theatres after several reports claimed that RRR may head for a direct-to-OTT release.

RRR is a historical fiction revolving around two real-life legendary Telugu figures, Alluri Seetharamaraju and Komaram Bheem set in the 1920s. The team recently wrapped its filming in Georgia and select locations in Hyderabad. MM Keeravani has scored the music for the film which has cinematography by Senthil Kumar.
