Santhanam is fast becoming the 'scream king' in his own rights. After an encouraging response to Dhilluku Dhuddu in 2016, a horror comedy, he turned it into a movie franchise. And so far he has made two more movies in the series. And the latest instalment is DD returns.
Thanks to the franchise's recall value, DD returns emerged as a successful venture for its producer this year. Written and directed by S.Prem Anand, DD returns also stars Surbhi, Redin Kingsley, Maran and Pradeep Rawat, besides Santhanam.
As DD Returns is set to make its streaming debut this week, here are four beloved Tamil horror comedies that you can stream right now on Sun NXT.
Kanchana:
It's one of the best movies yet in the Kanchana series. The massive success of this 2011 movie turned the horror-comedy genre into a sure-hot-winning formula at the Tamil Nadu box office. Many movies have followed the template that was created by this movie. While some have succeeded, most of them have failed. Even Raghava Lawrence himself couldn't better the Kanchana experience with his two other movies in the series.
Dhilluku Dhuddu:
The Dhilluku Dhuddu series began with the success of this movie in 2016. It is an antithesis to all the true horror genre movies. Filled with Santhanam's insult humour, the movie tells the story of a man, who mistakes actual ghosts for impostors. Things get funny when he also begins to direct his witty insults at a group of already agitated ghosts, leaving them in a state of sheer confusion.
Pizza:
It's doubtful whether director Karthik Subbaraj intended to evoke a sense of amusement and laughter when he made Pizza in 2012. But, it's what this movie offers. The majority of the movie plays out within the confines of an urban duplex. Vijay Sethupathi's Michael gets trapped in the house where he goes to deliver a pizza and things soon spiral out of control. While Michael's ordeal in the haunted house has strong horror elements, this part of the movie in a strange way will also tickle your funny bone.
Massu Engira Masilamani:
Is this one of the most underrated comedies in Suriya's career? Suriya has not done many full-fledged comedy roles so far. If we were to list his comedic performances in movies, Massu Engira Masilamani would be just below Sakthi in Pithamagan and Madhavan in Aadhavan. Suriya really lets his hair down playing the role of a con artist, who exploits ghosts to serve his personal agenda. Written and directed by Venkat Prabhu, the movie also stars Nayanthara, Pranitha Subhash, Premgi, Parthiban and Samuthirakani.
