Since the era of the nineties was dominated by melodious music, it often gets often referred to as the ‘musical era’ of Bollywood. And one amongst the names who is synonymous with this era is the the melodious and mellifluous singer Alka Yagnik. Speaking of Alka Yagnik, recently there was this news about her becoming the most-streamed artist in the world. With this feat, she beat the likes of Ed Sheeran, BTS, Drake, Taylor Swift, BTS and others. Besides being featured in the prestigious ‘Guinness Book of World Records’ for as many as three times, the melody queen that she is, has now, to her credit, of being the ‘Most-Streamed Singer Of 2022’, as per a news report in Hindustan Times. The news report stated that, as per the Guinness Book of World Records, Alka Yagnik's songs had recorded a total of a staggering 15.3 billion streams! This only goes onto state that, there were in all an average of a whopping 42 million streams per day! As per the news report, Alka Yagnik left behind globally renowned artists like BTS, Taylor Swift, Drake and Beyoncé and that too by a huge margin.
Speaking of BTS, Alka Yagnik recently spoke (read ‘confessed’) something about the globally famous K-Pop band BTS, in an interview with Radio Nasha. When asked about her reaction after having overtaken the likes of BTS, the extremely soft spoken Alka Yagnik said that, she asked her daughter as to who is BTS, hearing which , her daughter was taken aback. Alka added that, she told her daughter that, for her more streaming or less steaming didn’t matter. What mattered was that that people were listening to the song. She also added that, when her daughter made her realize the magnitude of the craze of BTS, she was very happy.
Looking back in time, Alka Yagnik also recalled those days when she innocently used to sing the songs which had ‘double meaning’, without even knowing what it actually meant. Alka said that, once she came back from the recordings, she used to tell that to her friends about how melodious the songs were. To which, her friends used to say that, ‘Pagal… these are double meaning tracks’. After that, Alka became doubly cautious and careful about every song. She used to insist on getting the lyrics first before she gave her nod to sing that song.
Alka Yagnik also recalled an incident about how she was not able to sing for A R Rahman in Mani Ratnam’s film ‘Roja’. She said that, when A R Rahman had just come to Mumbai, not many (in Mumbai) knew anything him. And when he asked Alka to meet him for a song, she called up Kumar Sanu for his advice. At that time, Kumar Sanu had said that, how can they leave their already committed works to other musicians. And that’s why Alka Yagnik chose to stick to her appointment diary to work with the musicians to whom she had already committed to. But, when she (Alka Yagnik) met A R Rahman (THE A R Rahman) after some time had passed to record her first song with him, the music maestro A R Rahman told her, “You did not sing my ‘Roja’ songs”. After hearing that, she felt so miserable that she just wanted to immerse inside the earth. In the same breath, she also added that, every time she heard ‘Dil hai chhoti saa’… something happens to her.
