Shekar Kapur made an endearing comeback to direction in 2022 with 'What's Love Got to Do with It?', a cross-cultural romantic comedy that transcended borders and proved that love, after all, triumphs over everything. The film, following an encouraging run across film festivals and in cinemas, is now ready to debut on OTT or streaming - 'What's Love Got to Do with It?' is set to premiere on Lionsgate Play on November 10, 2023, for the Indian viewers.

The vibrant cast of the film includes Lily James, Shazad Latif, Shabana Azmi, Emma Thompson, Sajal Ali, Oliver Chris, Asim Chaudhry, Jeff Mirza and others.

What is 'What's Love Got to Do with It?' about?

At its heart, Shekar Kapur's film is a sincere attempt to bridge borders and shine a light on inclusivity with the help of the principal cast. The story is centred around the relationship of childhood best friends Kazim 'Kaz' Khan (Shazad Latif) and Zoe Stevenson (Lily James) who, during the course of an arranged marriage, discover that they have feelings for one another.

Jemima Khan's narrative juggles between London and Lahore and as much as it follows the two protagonists and their emotional strifes, 'What's Love Got to Do with It?' also focuses on the ethnic diversity between the two places. In a way, Shekar Kapur's gaze here is tender and unheavy, leaving enough room for the romantic-comedy conventions to breathe and also make a poignant point about how relationships are viewed in different parts of the world.

How was the film received by critics?

'What's Love Got to Do with It?' first premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival before heading to the Rome Film Fest, where it won Best Comedy or the Ugo Tognazzi award. It was released in theatres in the UK in February 2023 to mixed to positive reviews. While critics felt that the film did not attempt to break the set mould of the rom-com genre, the central performances of Lily James and Shazad Latif, along with those of the ensemble cast, were praised everywhere.

For some, the film and its genre might have seemed like a bit of a departure for Kapur, who is best known globally for directing films like 'Masoom', 'Mr. India', 'Bandit Queen' and the two Elizabeth movies starring Cate Blanchett. However, considering that he has never confined himself to any particular 'brand of cinema' over his four-decade-long career, the film was received with great optimism all over.
