Marvel Studios, by the end of 2024, decided to mark the year's finale with one of their most beloved IPs: What If...?. The show returned for its third season, and the buzz was massive, as this was the final installment of the series. Yes, you heard that right. What If...? Season 3 marked the last time we would watch this show, raising the stakes higher than ever. This season featured the Watcher taking a more active role than merely observing the randomness unfolding across the universe. Amid the chaos, Peggy Carter had to step in to take control. However, the finale left viewers hanging on a drastic note, leading to widespread confusion about what transpired.
What If...? Season 3 Ending Explained
In the possibility-laden universe, the world is on the brink of extinction. However, the Watcher shows generosity by giving the team a chance to redeem themselves, granting Peggy Carter’s team the power of the Watcher. But is that enough for a plan involving transporting everyone to a parallel universe? How will these new heroes accomplish this? And what will it mean for the Multiverse and the madness it unleashes? While the entire season may not be as compelling, the finale holds significant weight.
The finale episode, titled What If...? What If...?, begins with a flashback to the time when the Watcher, Uatu, took an oath to preserve the natural order and remain an observer. In the present, Uatu faces a trial for violating this oath. Peggy Carter (voiced by Hayley Atwell) leads a rescue mission for the Watcher, joined by Kahhori, Storm, and Byrdie. However, Infinity Ultron attacks the Eminence and two fellow Watchers: the Incarnate and the Executioner.
The team escapes to a new universe, led by Strange Supreme, but they are aware the Watchers will have no powers there. Before long, Infinity Ultron is defeated by the trio of Watchers. The groups clash fiercely, and Uatu transfers his powers to Peggy, Kahhori, Byrdie, and Storm, guiding them through the Watcher’s oath.
Using their newfound abilities, the heroes overpower the Watchers, resulting in their merging into one entity with a singular aim: to eliminate every possible variant of the heroes across the Multiverse. In a heart-wrenching turn, Peggy Carter sacrifices herself to stop this. She sends the Watchers, Uatu, Kahhori, Byrdie, and Storm to Strange Supreme’s universe.
The episode concludes with Peggy’s funeral on the Observational Plane, confirming her death. In the final moments, Uatu mentions feeling watched for the first time, leaving the audience with a tantalizing mystery.
