Unlike Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana, where audiences got a preview of the kind of music – songs and background score – to expect prior to the film’s release, with Toby, Raj B Shetty and composer Midhun Mukundan played their cards close to their chest. This time, they chose to only reveal the Maari theme, which plays out during a pivotal juncture in the film and tease the background score in the trailer. There was no word on the songs, or even how many of them would be in the final film, prior to the film’s original August 25 theatrical outing. In the time since, although there have been requests to release the soundtrack of Toby on streaming platforms, the team has not obliged.

Until today, that is. A little while ago, the first lyrical number from Toby, albeit in a Malayalam version, was released ahead of the film’s Kerala release on September 22. Called Thennale, the song composed by Midhun and sung by Haricharan features Raj, Samyukta Hornad and baby Snigdha, who plays the younger version of Toby’s daughter Jenny in the film. The song comes at a crucial point in the narrative and establishes Toby’s relationship with Savitri, played by Samyukta, as well as his dynamic with Jenny. Midhun tells us that Haricharan’s voice will also feature in the Tamil version of the song, while Siddhartha Belmannu has sung the Kannada original, as well as the Telugu and Hindi versions.

Toby, meawhile, is prepping for its date with audiences in Kerala. The film is being presented by Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films and will hit theatres on September 22. Raj, Chaithra J Achar (who plays the older Jenny) and director Basil Alchalakkal have been in Kochi in the last two days to promote the film, with Midhun expected to join them tomorrow. The composer, who had been juggling work on Toby and Ramachandra Boss and Co at the same time, is currently basking in the success of his Telugu debut, the viral hit, Lingi Lingi Lingidi from Kotabommali PS, the remake of the Malayakam film Nayattu.
