Vikram, the biggest Tamil language film of all time, finished its legendary run at the box office a few weeks ago, but an update was due. The Lokesh Kanagaraj-directed action thriller starring Kamal Haasan, Fahadh Fassil, and Vijay Sethupathi grossed a whopping Rs 432.50 crore worldwide, with India accounting for Rs 307.60 crore.
At the beginning of June, Vikram began as a high-speed train and, over the next few weeks, broke almost every record in Kollywood history. Among the numerous other records broken, the most significant was becoming the highest grosser ever in the state of Tamil Nadu, surpassing Baahubali 2 by nearly Rs 40 crore. The film brought 1 crore people to the state's cinemas, with 1.22 crore admissions, a first for Kollywood in a long time, with Enthiran in 2010 likely being the last.
With Rs 373 crore, Vikram, also became the highest-grossing Tamil language film globally, surpassing 2.0's previous best of Rs. 288 crore. However, when all versions are considered, it is number two because Rajinikanth's 2.0 grossed significantly more in Hindi and Telugu for a total of Rs 665 crore.
Vikram marked Kamal Haasan's return to the big screen after four years. The film was based on a spy character created by the actor himself for his 1985 film of the same name.
On the success of Vikram, Kamal Haasan, in an interview with Galatta Plus, further emphasised the significance of positively promoting the film. He stated that any negativity that may arise within the production team could spread and eventually harm the result.
"I'm not sure why they liked Vikram. They might not enjoy my next film. And I will be solely responsible for this. We can't blame them. Who else am I supposed to hold accountable? They should recognise my brilliance. They should be ashamed of themselves for setting mediocrity as a standard," Kamal added.
Ulaganayagan promised to continue making films that improve the standards and taste of Tamil cinema. “This generation may be unaware that Sakalakala Vallavan was as popular as Vikram today. It amassed the largest collection at the time, and everyone rejoiced. I had the impression that I had reached my peak. The same audience, however, made Moondram Pirai a silver jubilee success the following year. If made today, Mahanadhi will be a smash hit. If Anbe Sivam is released today, it will mark its silver jubilee!”
