Prime Video announced the premiere date of Waack Girls, an original drama series. Sooni Taraporevala wrote the show, Ronny Sen co-directed it, and Iyanah Bativala co-produced it. Matter Entertainment, Chalkboard Entertainment, Jigri Dost Productions, and Caleb Franklin, Vikesh Bhutani, and Sooni Taraporevala are the producers. In addition to the veteran actors Barun Chanda and Lillete Dubey, as well as the talented newcomers Mekhola Bose, Anasua Chowdhury, Rytasha Rathore, Chrisann Pereira, Priyam Saha, Ruby Sah, and Achintya Bose, the series also features a plethora of musical and dance numbers. The nine-part series will have its Hindi premiere on November 22 on Prime Video, with additional language dubs in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada.
The story unfolds as six fearlessly individualistic young women in the bustling metropolis of Kolkata form a dance company and perform waacking, a dance form unfamiliar to a nation and city. The girls band together as the Waack Girls and launch themselves into the limelight. Mekhola Bose and Rytasha Rathore, respectively, portray Lopa, the group's energetic and feisty manager, and Ishani, the group's master waacker and choreographer. The series chronicles their struggles with self-esteem, familial pressures, and social conventions alongside their exploits on and off the dance floor.
Sooni Taraporevala fell in love with waacking the first time she saw Mekhola Bose dance, even before she knew its name. Thanks to her, the filmmaker was able to craft an innovative and entertaining story, and she is ecstatic to share Waack Girls with the world. However, the series is unlike any other dance show. Audiences will relate to at least one of the six females because they all face different challenges. All the girls possess bravery and rebellion, enabling them to live their own lives and take ownership of the space they've worked so hard to secure.
Taraporevala's sincere appreciation goes out to Prime Video, the fantastic crew responsible for this show, and her magnificent girls, who have spared no effort in realising her dream. The anticipation of having the crowds dance with them is killing her.
