Kerala State Award-winning actor Vinayakan is never the one to mince words. During the press meet of the movie Oruthee, which has Navya Nair and him in lead roles, the actor vehemently supported the idea of cancelling fan shows in Mollywood.
Calling fans “fools”, he said, “Just because they decide something, it’s not going to change anything.” The actor also went ahead and cited an example of how the fans of a “great actor” had announced that his movie had raked in Rs 1.5 crore within 4 hours of its release. When Vinayakan sought out the details, he said, “I found out that the movie released at 12:30PM and by the interval at 1:30PM, the audience ran out of theatres… It was the movie of the biggest superstar here but no one was there to watch the film. So, fans can’t make a movie good or a bad.”
While many supported Vinayakan’s stand on this matter, the actor, however, did draw flak for his insensitive comments against the #MeToo movement at the same press meet held in Kochi on March 22.
Vinayakan was part of two acclaimed films this month – VK Prakash’s Oruthee and Kamal KM’s Pada. In Oruthee, he played a tough and upright police officer, who helps out Navya’s character of a boat conductor after she is hoodwinked by jewellery owners. The movie is also set to get a sequel, which will go on floors by December 2022 and will have Vinayakan, Navya and Saiju Kurup reprising their roles.
In Pada, which is based on true events, the actor played the lead role of Balu Kallar, who is one of the four Ayyankali Pada members who hold the Palakkad district collector hostage, demanding the Kerala government to revert the amendments made to the 1975 Scheduled Tribes Land Act.
