In May this year, Vinay Rajkumar will complete a decade in the Kannada film industry, a time in which he will be all of five films old as a leading man (Vinay has several films as a child artiste to his credit). The fifth, as it turns out, is coming out this year, when his film with director Simple Suni, Ondu Sarala Prema Kathe hits theatres. A romantic comedy, the film was expected to be in theatres closer to Valentines Day and, as it turns out, the team has zeroed in on February 8 for its date with audiences.
Ondu Sarala Prema Kathe (OSPK) comes just over a decade after Suni debuted with the film Simple Agi Ond Love Story, the title of which means the same as his latest. Incidentally, OSPK is the title that Suni had planned for his debut, but changed eventually. The filmmaker had been waiting for an opportunity to use it again, which then came with this film. OSPK, which was shot across locations in Mysuru, pairs Vinay with Mallika Singh and has his father, Raghavendra Rajkumar in a pivotal role. A musical love story, the film has as many as 11 songs composed by Veer Samarth, Suni had said, but added that only three will feature as full-length tunes in the narrative, with the rest serving as bridges to take the narrative forward. The abundance of music makes sense, given that Mallika plays a singer called Madhura in the film, while Vinay is Athishay, an aspiring music director. The film has a second heroine in the form of debutante Swathishta Krishna.
Ondu Sarala Prema Kathe is, incidentally, a story that had been narrated to Vinay’s late uncle Puneeth Rajkumar and eventually came to him. It’s a film that Suni started when there was a delay in the post-production of Avatara Purusha 2. Also on the cast are Sadhu Kokila, Rajesh Nataranga and Aruna Balaraj, among others. Vinay, meanwhile, has two other films ready for release, Pepe and Andondittu Kaala, both of which were complete way before OSPK, but are yet to hit theatres.
