Just like in recent years, 2022 saw a number of Hindi releases that were a remake of popular South Indian films. Here are a few notable ones among them.

Bachchhan Paandey

Akshay Kumar's action comedy, which was helmed by Farhad Samji, was a remake of the Tamil film Jigarthanda (2014), which had Siddharth and Bobby Simha in the lead. The Tamil version emerged as one of the biggest hits of director Karthik Subbaraj, and bagged two National Awards- Best Supporting Actor for Bobby Simha and Best Editing for Vivek Harshan. However, the Hindi remake tanked at the box office.

Jersey

Shahid Kapoor's sports drama Jersey was a remake of the Telugu film of the same name. While the Telugu original starred Nani and Shraddha Srinath, the Hindi version featured Mrunal Thakur and Pankaj Kapoor. Both films were helmed by director Gowtam Tinnanuri. The remake, however, fared poorly at the box office

Vikram Vedha

Vikram Vedha marked the arrival of the popular duo Pushkar-Gayatri in Hindi. The neo-noir action thriller starred Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan as the titular characters. The plot, which is loosely inspired from the folktale Baital Pachisi, was originally made in Tamil by the same directors and had Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi in the lead. The film was a massive hit at the box office. However, the Hindi remake didn't fare as well as expected.

Mili

Survival thriller Mili is the remake of the Malayalam film Helen (2019), which had Anna Ben in the titular role. The Hindi remake had Janvhi Kapoor in the lead, and was directed by Mathukutty Xavier, who had also directed the original. The film received mixed reviews and Janhvi's performance in the film won praise.

Drishyam 2

As the name suggests, the crime thriller is a remake of the Malayalam film of the same name and is a sequel to Drishyam. The Hindi version had Ajay Devgn, Tabu and Shriya Khanna reprising their characters from the original. The thriller directed by Abhishek Pathak emerged as one of the highest grossers in Bollywood in 2022.

Cuttputli

Akshay Kumar's Cuttputli bombed badly at the box office, adding to the actor's list of failures in 2022 (others including Samrat Prithviraj, Ram Setu and Bachchan Pandey). The film was a remake of the Ratsasan, which has Vishnu Vishal, Amala Paul and Saravanan in the lead and was directed by Ram Kumar. The original in Tamil was a hit and Ghibran's music was a huge plus to the slasher psychological thriller.

Sidharth Sengupta marked his directorial debut with Good Luck Jerry, the remake of the popular Tamil black comedy Kolamavu Kokila. While the Tamil version directed by Nelson Dilipkumar had Nayanthara in the lead and was a massive hit, the Hindi remake starred Janhvi Kapoor. The film premiered on Disney + Hotstar.
