Vikram, which hit the screens on June 3, minted Rs 32 crore, at the box office, out of which Rs 20 crore, came from Tamil Nadu. Only films, featuring Rajinikanth, Ajith Kumar and Thalapathy Vijay, have made Rs 20 crore, on the first day of their respective releases, in Tamil Nadu. According to sources, the Lokesh Kanagaraj-directorial grossed over Rs 5.25 crore in Kerala, and Rs 3.25 crore in the Telugu-speaking States. Further, Vikram had a great run at the Overseas box office, too.
Trade pundits predict the film will cross the Rs 100 crore mark, in a few days. A theatre owner tells OTTplay, “The business was fantastic on the first day one, with shows getting booked completely, till Monday evening. I wouldn't be surprised if Vikram surpasses the Rs 100 crore mark in Tamil Nadu itself.”
Actor Suriya, who played a cameo in Vikram, took to social media on Saturday and thanked Kamal Haasan, for making his dreams come true. Even before the release, Kamal Haasan had revealed that he was in talks with Suriya, for a film, under his home banner, RKFI, which didn't materialise. The actor-politician said it only took a phone call for him to get Suriya on board, without any hassle.
Of 1100 screens in Tamil Nadu, Vikram was released on 800 screens. Also, the Telugu version was released on around 400 screens.
During one of the promotional interviews, Kamal Haasan said, "When people say a south language film is successful, ultimately, it is an Indian film that is succeeding. It does not matter which part of the country makes it."
The actor-politician, who has worked in over 230 films, across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi and Bengali film industries, believes artists are great “uniting factors”, for the country's cultural framework.
Citing his directorial ventures Hey Ram and Vishwaroopam as examples, Kamal Haasan said he shot both the films in Hindi and Tamil to reach a wider audience, something Hindi filmmakers need to pursue, to transcend the language barrier. “There is still a lot of potential for Hindi cinema to grow. The reason it is not growing is that it is not coming closer. The linguistic barrier is stopping them,” he added.
Also starring Fahadh Faasil, Vijay Sethupathi, and Narain, among others in prominent roles, Vikram has music by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography by Girish Gangadharan of Jallikattu-fame, and editing by Philomin Raj of Master-fame.
