Netflix on Wednesday confirmed that it owns the streaming rights to the upcoming movie Maharaja, which features Vijay Sethupathi in the lead role.

Netflix has unveiled the slate of its licenced Tamil-language movies that will become available for streaming on its platform after their theatrical run this year. Earlier, the streaming giant confirmed that Tamil superstar Ajith Kumar's Vidaa Muyarchi is also part of its impressive Tamil lineups for 2024.

According to the current industry practice, all new Tamil movies make their streaming debut after a four-week exclusive theatrical run. Besides its original Tamil version, Maharaja will also be available for streaming in Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.

The theatrical release date of Maharaja, however, has not been announced, yet. It is a special film for Sethupathi as it is his 50th film in a career spanning nearly 25 years.

At this moment, we know very little about the genre and the storyline of Maharaja. Based on the first look posters, the film seems to deal with an emotionally charged issue. The poster revealed a badly hurt Sethupathi sitting on a saloon chair wielding a blood-stained machete against a desolate backdrop. It's safe to assume that this film will carry a lot of political undertones, which is the case of most of Sethupathi's movies.

While we don't what director Nithilan Swaminathan has in store for the fans of Sethupathi, he seems quite confident that this movie will strike a chord with them.

"Sometimes I get irked when people ask me whether Maharaja will be his comeback film. I lash out at them asking, when did he suffer a setback to come back? So far I have never noticed shortcomings in his work," director Nithilan Swaminathan said earlier during a press conference.

Nithilan heaped praises on Sethupathi, noting that he hasn't seen a versatile actor like him. "I was impressed by what he has managed to do in this film. I never knew a person could act like this. It might sound like I am self-boasting. But, you will see what I am saying when you watch the film. The movie has come out beautifully," he added.

Besides Sethupathi, Maharaja also stars Anurag Kashyap, Abhirami, Mamta Mohandas, Bharathiraja and Divya Bharathi among others.

Maharaja is only Nithilan's second directorial outing after his debut movie Kurangu Bommai, which came out in 2017.
