Kannada cinema’s Chinnari Muttha Vijay Raghavendra’s first release for the year is rather special. Called Raaghu, the film stars only Vijay, and the actor says that its speciality is not only that it is a solo-act project, but also that there is an intriguing crime thriller angle to it as well. “Raaghu is not the first solo-act film in Kannada cinema; there have been other similar efforts. The single-actor concept is an experimental thought adopted for the film, but over and above that, it is a crime thriller, with good action and suspense. The team wanted to present this in a different manner and that is how Raaghu came to be,” explains Vijay, speaking on the side-lines of the film’s trailer release.
The actor adds that although he is the only one onscreen, the narrative will have audiences wondering whether he is being tortured by someone, or if he is inflicting torture on another person. “There will be a constant sense of wonder as to what is transpiring. And that is what makes the film interesting. In fact, the suspense will keep building up to the interval block, that audiences will be glued to their seats to find out what will happen next,” he adds.
What is even more interesting, according to Vijay, is that the film is not set at a single location. “There are multiple locations and the narrative keeps shifting from one to the other, taking Raaghu all across Bengaluru, where he encounters other characters, who are not seen onscreen though. The what, why and how of this will be revealed along the way,” he says.
The posters of the film have Vijay in a very massy avatar. The actor explains that it captures the anger felt by his character, something he’s not had to do in most of his other films. Directed by M Anand Raj, Raaghu releases in theatres on April 28.
