Vijay Antony opens up on his decision to direct Pichaikkaran 2

Vijay Antony, the musician-turned-actor confirmed that he would be directing a sequel to his 2016 blockbuster Pichaikkaran/ Bichagadu. The sequel is titled Pichaikkaran 2. The news was announced by filmmaker AR Murugadoss through his Twitter handle. Murugadoss wrote:

Meanwhile, opening up on turning into a director, Vijay told The Times of India, “Two years ago, I got a spark for the sequel. We wanted to rope in a director to helm the project, but over time, I felt it would be easier if I directed the film.”

It was hinted earlier that National Award-winning director Priya Krishnaswamy will direct the movie. Vijay said that the film is about a problem we are all aware of, but they offer a small solution. Vijay also remarked that he did not venture into the field of direction because he always had a good team to support him in his previous movies.

Pichaikkaran, directed by Sasi, narrates the story of Arul (Vijay), a millionaire businessman who had to act like a beggar for 41 days to save his mother’s life. The movie was more focused on exposing the social evils existing in society than its central religious theme. Following its commercial success in Tamil, the movie was remade in Odia, Marathi and Kannada. It was also dubbed to Telugu and released under the name Bichagadu.

Vijay Antony debuted into the Tollywood industry in the 2012 movie Naan, in which he played an ex-convict who takes on another identity to leave behind his life of violence. He still composes music for his own movies. Writer Bhashyasree who wrote the first part is roped in for the sequel too.
