Vidya Balan, over the years, through the kind of movies she chooses, has built a niche for herself. The journey to the top wasn't easy for the actor, who has made some of the most unconventional career choices and excelled in them with her talent and skills. But along with that also came the tag of an actor who can carry a movie on her own. While everything about that statement exudes power and proves her mettle as an artist, it also means that male actors may have reservations about working with her.
In her latest conversation while promoting her movie Do Aur Do Pyaar, she opened up about how men are still not comfortable starring in a film that features her in the lead, or any female actor in the lead, for that matter.
Speaking with Indian Express, Vidya Balan was asked about the reaction of men back in the day when she was choosing the roles she does. The actor was quick to add that it is not a thing of the past, but even today they aren't comfortable with starring in a movie alongside her or any other female-led movie, for that matter.
Vidya said, “Back in the day? (rolls eyes) I don’t think they’d be okay even today to star in a Vidya Balan film or a female-led film for that matter. It’s their loss honestly because we are doing better films than they are. I genuinely believe that. They are doing more formula-based films, while women-led films are far more exciting.”
“Of course, people have been appreciative, but male stars are uncomfortable with women taking center stage. I don’t think they’d be okay with anyone stealing the thunder. But I never felt bad. I was like if they are threatened, what can I do? (laughs),” Vidya Balan added.
Vidya Balan also spoke about a lot of things from Nepotism, the business, and more. She was in attendance with Pratik Gandhi, who plays her husband in Do Aur Do Pyaar. The movie also stars Illeana D'Cruz and Sendhil Ramamurthy in lead roles. The film is set to hit the big screen next week on April 19, 2024.
