Balan, an ex-student of the prestigious St Xaviers College, Mumbai is known for pioneering a change in the portrayal of women with her roles in female-led films.

Inspired by the works of Shabana Azmi and Madhuri Dixit, Balan made her debut with the Bengali film Bhalo Theko in 2003. However, Pradeep Sarkars Parineeta is what got her into the limelight.

Post Parineeta, Balan went on and starred in several great films, such as Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Heyy Babbyy and Bhool Bhulaiya. Her work in Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani received wide acclaim and received several awards for the same.

Her most recent work, which was released on Amazon Prime Video is Suresh Trivenis thriller, Jalsa. Along with Balan, the film is headlined by Shefali Shah. The supporting cast includes Manav Kaul and a fantastic Rohini Hattangady.
