Popular filmmaker Shoojit Sircar on Sunday revealed that he turned down the opportunity of making a sequel to the hit 2012 blockbuster Vicky Donor. During a virtual session of the Indian Film Project, he said that though he was offered an unimaginable sum for the sequel, he didn’t believe in making the film again.
Chronicling the tale of a sperm donor, the film features Ayushmann Khurrana and Yami Gautam in their big-screen debut. The movie was a major hit during the time of its release, and it travelled ahead to win the National Award for the best popular film. The movie was Sircar’s third feature after the 2005 movie Yahaan and Amitabh Bachchan’s unreleased Shoebite.
Post Vicky Donor, the filmmaker has nailed his name thoroughly in the industry with hits in diverse genres like Madras Cafe, Piku, Gulabo Sitabo and his latest Sardar Udham. According to him, cinema is all about one particular idea that wraps him up unless he finishes it out of intuition.
Further talking about his latest blockbuster Sardar Udham, he said that Irrfan Khan’s demise gave him sleepless nights as the actor was initially cast as the lead. After Irrfan backed out due to his illness, the project was moved to Vicky Kaushal, and the whole journey was made in a step-by-step manner.
Sircar is currently reaping the glorious victory of his latest historical drama, which was released on the popular OTT platform Amazon Prime Video on October 16. The biographical movie is based on the life of freedom fighter Udham Singh, who is known for assassinating Michael O’Dwyer, responsible for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
