The actor passed away at a private hospital in Kochi where he was undergoing treatment after he complained of breathing problems and uneasiness. The medical bulletin released earlier by the hospital authorities had stated that with major comorbidities, his vital signs were not on favourable level. He was put on ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) and was being monitored. Innocent had been diagnosed with cancer, but in 2015, the actor revealed that he was cancer-free. He later chronicled his battle with cancer in the book titled Cancer Wardile Chiri (Laughter in the Cancer Ward).
Innocent made his onscreen debut in 1972. Nrithasala. The actor, who has been a crucial part of Malayalam cinema for over five decades, featured in over 750 films. His repertoire includes Lekhayude Maranam Oru Flashback, Akkare Ninnoru Maran, Gandhinagar 2nd Street, Unnikale Oru Kadha Parayam, Ramji Rao Speaking, Vadakkunokkiyantram, Mazhavil Kavadi, Thoovalsparsham, Gajakesariyogam, Nadodikkattu, Adhwaytham, Kabooliwala, Devasuram, No 20 Madras Mail, Kottayam Kunjachan, Kilukkam, Thalayanamanthram, Manichitrathazhu, Godfather,Vietnam Colony, Mannar Mathai Speaking, Aniyathi Pravu, Chandralekha, Vellithira, Manasinakkare, Achuvinte Amma, to name a few.
He was last seen in Prithviraj's Kaduva and his upcoming project Paachuvum Albhuthavilakkum will mark his last outing in cinema. The film, directed by Akhil Sathyan,will feature Fahadh Faasil, Innocent and Mukesh.

He even produced films like Vida Parayum Munpe, Ilakkangal and Ormakkayi. Innocent served as the president of Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) for 15 years.
The actor also tested waters in politics and won the 2014 Lok Sabha elections as left-front backed independent candidate from Chalakudy, Thrissur. However, in 2019, he lost the seat.
