For the third and final instalment of the trilogy, Venom: The Last Dance, Hardy stars as the multi-layered and iconic character Venom, created by Marvel. In the film, Eddie has gone into hiding with Venom. The two must make a heartbreaking decision that will end Venom and Eddie's dance together as the net tightens around them.
Some critics praised Hardy's portrayal, the action scenes, and the visual effects, while others criticised the storyline. At $476.4 million, it is the seventh highest-grossing film of 2024.
Tom Hardy portrays Eddie Brock, an investigative journalist, as the host of Venom, an extraterrestrial symbiote-powered show. Chiwetel Ejiofor plays the role of General Rex Strickland, an Imperial officer on the hunt for Eddie and Venom. Juno Temple portrays Dr. Teddy Paine, an Imperium scientist still troubled by the lightning bolt that killed her brother and crippled her arm. Rhys Ifans portrays the character of Martin Moon, a free spirit and space nut.
Knull, the symbiotes' King in Black, who first appeared in the 2018 source material, appears in the film. Despite the producers' constant awareness of the character, they opted to introduce Eddie Brock and Venom's relationship with him first, setting the stage for the Marvel supervillain's appearance. Sony hired Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman for advisory roles and allowed Cates to at least read the screenplay, as they found inspiration in the Venom comic books by David Michelinie, Todd McFarlane, and Ryan Stegman. Ryan Stegman and Donny Cates are the inventors of Knull. With Knull's inclusion, Cates and Stegman anticipated financial recompense.
Kelly Marcel revealed just before the film's October 2024 release that, although The Last Dance wraps up Eddie Brock and Venom's story arc, it begins the character Knull's journey and sets him up for future appearances inside Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU).
Although the film was meant to be the last installment of the Venom trilogy, Hardy hinted at a potential return to the role and a Spider-Man crossover, stating, "Never say never."
Though Variety debunked TheWrap's December 2024 assertion that Kraven the Hunter was the last instalment in Sony's Spider-Man Universe, the studio has stated that it will continue to produce films with the Spider-Man cast.
