Director Venkat Prabhu had recently revealed that he had plans to make the sequel to his hit film Mankatha, an action thriller that had Ajith in the lead. The director, who had recently been at a private college in Chennai, casually revealed his original plan to make a sequel to Mankatha, that too with both Ajith and Vijay. He added that he had discussed the plan with both the actors but things didn't really materialise. Venkat Prabhu has always been vocal about his plan to make another film with Ajith. The director, who recently completed 15 years in the film industry, had also caught up the actor for a casual chat.
Mankatha marks Ajith's 50th film and is considered one of the biggest hits of Ajith. The film has an ensemble star cast that comprises Arjun Sarja, Trisha Krishnan, Lakshmi Rai, Andrea Jeremiah, Anjali, Vaibhav Reddy, Premji Amaren and Mahat Raghavendra, Ashwin Kakumanu, Jayaprakash, Subbu Panchu, to name a few. The film has gained a cult status among Ajith fans. The plot revolves around a suspended cop, involved in a money heist and betting. Music for the film is by Yuvan Shankar Raja, cinematography by Sakthi Saravanan and editing is by Aravind Akash.
While Ajith was last seen in Valimai, an action entertainer directed by H Vinoth and produced by Boney Kapoor, Venkat Prabhu's last release was Maanaadu, which had Silambarasan and SJ Suryah in the lead. The latter was an action entertainer set in a time loop, which won rave reviews from the audience. Valimai had Ajith, Karthikeya, Huma Qureshi and Gurbani Judge as part of the star cast. The film marks Ajith's second collaboration with H Vinoth after the critically acclaimed Nerkonda Paarvai, which was the remake of the legal drama Pink, originally directed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury.
