Kannada film Kantara, written and directed by Rishab Shetty, has set the box office on fire. The film stars Rishab Shetty, Kishore, Achyuth Kumar and Pramod Shetty in the lead. Kantara is a period film set in the 18th century when a king offers a piece of land to the tribals in a forest and after centuries, his successor demands the villagers to return the land during the Bhoota kala festival (a spirit worship in the coastal Tulu region of Karnataka). The film has opened to positive reviews from the critics and audience.
To congratulate the team on its success, Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu star Silambarasan TR sent across a cake to team Kantara. The film's producer, Karthik Gowda, who bankrolled the film under the Hombale Films banner, shared the cake on his social media handle and thanked the actor. He wrote, "Thanks a lot @SilambarasanTR_ ! STR for a reason (sic)." Silambarasan replied to the tweet saying, "Pleasure is mine ! Congrats again on your success. Team #Kantara (sic)."
Kantara hit screens on September 30, the same time as the release of the Tamil magnum opus, Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan and the Hindi neo-noir action crime thriller Vikram Vedha, directed by Pushkar-Gayatri. But despite the release of the two biggies, Kantara raked in the moolah at the box office.
The film has Rishab Shetty playing Kaadubettu Shiva, a Kambala champion, who has an arch nemesis in the upright DRFO officer Muralidhar (essayed by Kishore). It is said that Rishab Shetty trained in Kambala for a span of four months to prepare for his character. Kantara has been receiving a lot of praise for various aspects of the film, especially the Bhoota Kala sequences in the film, which have won the hearts of the audience. The film is going steady at the box office with good footfalls.
