Varshangalkku Shesham, the period drama directed by actor-filmmaker Vineeth Sreenivasan is gearing up for its grand OTT release on Sony LIV, on June 7, 2024. The movie, which stars Pranav Mohanlal and Dhyan Sreenivasan in the lead roles, hit the theatres in April 2024 and emerged as a major commercial success. After its successful theatrical run, Varshangalkku Shesham is reportedly set to stream on Sony LIV in five languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi.

The much-awaited OTT release of the Vineeth Sreenivasan directorial is expected to bring a major change for Sony LIV, especially in terms of popularity and reach. For the uninitiated, Varshangalkku Shesham is the first ever true-blue Malayalam commercial entertainer to release on the popular streaming platform. Even though Sony LIV has been actively releasing excellent content in Malayalam including many highly acclaimed films, the platform never had an out-and-out commercial film in its library.

Sony LIV’s biggest Malayalam release so far was Bramayugam, the black-and-white period horror film that featured Mammootty in the lead role. Even though the Rahul Sadasivan directorial performed extremely well at the box office and earned super hit status, it cannot be considered a commercial film. Bramayugam, in every sense, is an experimental film that was done right. And that is the reason why releasing Varshangalkku Shesham has been considered the most important, and well-thought creative choice made by the leading OTT platform.

The period drama film features Pranav Mohanlal and Dhyan Sreenivasan in the lead roles. Nivin Pauly, who made a cameo appearance in the film, highly impressed the audience with his impeccable comic timing and charming screen presence. The songs composed by newcomer Amrith Ramnath highly impressed Malayalam film music lovers. Varshangalkku Shesham is indeed the perfect commercial entertainer that is eagerly awaited by OTT viewers. The release of Vineeth Sreenivasan’s film on Sony LIV is expected to draw the family audience to the platform and contribute to its popularity.

Even though Varshangalkku Shesham is the first Malayalam commercial film to be released on Sony LIV, the streaming platform has always done a great job with its content from the industry. The OTT giant has an extraordinary library of many highly acclaimed Malayalam films, including Jude Anthany Joseph’s blockbuster survival thriller 2018, Ratheena’s Mammootty starrer Puzhu, Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Churuli, Rahul Sadasivan’s horror drama Bhoothakaalam, Senna Hegde’s Thinkalazhcha Nishchayam, and many more.

Even though the recent releases Innale Vare and Chaaver received mixed reactions from audiences, Sony LIV made a massive comeback with the excellent reviews received by Bramayugam, which hit the OTT screens in March 2024. More highly anticipated Malayalam films and series, including Krishand’s Sambhavavivaranam Nalara Sangham and Manu Ashokan’s Eyes, are about to have a direct OTT release on Sony LIV, by the second half of 2024.
