Malayalam cinema had its most successful movie release seasons in history, in February 2024. After the successes of Abraham Ozler and Answeshippin Kandethum, the industry had three back-to-back blockbusters including Premalu, Bramayugam, and Manjummel Boys. The romantic drama crossed the Rs. 117 crore mark at the box office, and the Chidambaram directorial opened the Rs. 200 crore club in the industry. The industry is now set to have another massive release season in April 2024, with the back-to-back releases of Varshangalkku Shesham, Aavesham, and Jai Ganesh.
April 2024 is a crucial month for the Malayalam film industry, as many highly anticipated films including Vineeth Sreenivasan’s Varshangalkku Shesham which stars Pranav Mohanlal in the lead role, Fahadh Faasil starrer Aavesham, Unni Mukundan, and Ranjith Sankar’s Jai Ganesh, and others. With the upcoming period drama, director Vineeth is set to try a different kind of genre, yet again. Jithu Madhavan's Fahadh starrer is expected to be a complete entertainer, while Unni and director Ranjith are set to experiment with a superhero subject.
Both the romantic drama and survival thriller opened up new territories for Malayalam cinema both in other states and overseas centers. Bramayugam, the Mammootty-Rahul Sadasivan project, re-established Malayalam cinema as one of the most daring film industries in the country. All these new developments are indeed going to benefit the Vishu releases, especially when it comes to the commercial aspects.
The massive successes of 2024’s first quarter confirm that Malayalam cinema’s boundaries have been pushed more than anyone in the industry ever imagined. From the promotional material that we have seen so far, things indeed look great for the April 2024 releases.
Varshangalkku Shesham, which marks the second onscreen collaboration of Vineeth Sreenivasan and Pranav Mohanlal after Hridayam, is indeed one of the most anticipated films of the year. The project is also expected to make it big at the rest of India’s box office, especially in Tamil Nadu, it is majorly set in the Madras of the 1970s. The period drama, which celebrates cinema and its biggest stars including MG Ramachandran, has the potential to emerge as the second Rs. 200 crore film from Malayalam film, following Manjummel Boys.
Aavesham, which is touted to be a spin-off to the blockbuster movie Romancham, features Fahadh Faasil in a never-seen-before avatar. The Jithu Madhavan directorial revolves around the National Award-winner's character Ranga, who is a famous goon from Karnataka. From the first teaser and songs, it is safe to assume that the movie is made in a way that appeals to the sensibilities of the pan-Indian audience. The movie, indeed, has the chance to emerge as one of the biggest box office hits in the industry and enter the Rs. 200 crore club.
Ranjith Sankar and Unni Mukundan, on the other hand, are set to release their ambitious project Jai Ganesh, which is a mystery thriller with superhero elements. The box office successes of Meppadiyan and Malikappuram have established Unni as a bankable star in the industry. The actor's influence among the common audience, and the superhero subject clearly states that the movie is going to be celebrated as well.
