Valentine's Day is just around the corner and romance is in the air. Cashing in on the romantic charm, theatres are seeing a flurry of re-releases of some of the iconic romantic films, which include Shah Rukh Khan's Dilwale Dulhanian le Jayenge (one of the longest running films of Indian cinema), Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet's Titanic, Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor's Tamasha, Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor's Jab We Met, Julia Roberts and George Clooney's Ticket to Paradise, Sai Pallavi and Nivin Pauly's Premam and Kalyani Priyadarshan and Pranav Mohanlal's Hridayam to name a few.
Among the list, two Tamil films are also back to cast a spell on the audience- Madhavan and Reema Sen's Minnale and Trisha and Silambarasan TR's Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya. Minnale marked Gautham Vasudev Menon's debut as a director. The romantic film also starred Abbas in a supporting role. The plot revolves around a lovestruck Rajesh (Madhavan) who borrows the identity of his college nemesis Sam (Abbas) to win the heart of his ladylove Reena (Reema Sen). The film marked the debut of composer Harris Jayaraj and lyricist Thamarai, who penned the lyrics of the iconic Vaseegara. The film went on to become a runaway hit and was later remade in Hindi as Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Main, with Madhavan reprising his role and Dia Mirza as the leading lady.
Vinnaithandi Varuvaya, which is once again being screened in theatres during the Valentine's week, is yet another romantic venture by Gautham Vasudev Menon, starring Trisha and Silambarasan TR in the lead. The film was simultaneously shot in Telugu as Ye Maaya Chesave starring Naga Chaitanya and Samantha. The film explores the complicated relationship between Karthik (Simbu) and his neighbour Jessie (Trisha). The film was said to be the comeback of Gautham Menon in the romance genre. Music by AR Rahman turned out to be a chartbuster and thus marked the maiden collaboration between Gautham Menon and Rahman. Gautham later made a short featuring the lead characters titled Karthik Dial Seytha Yenn during the lockdown.
