A day away from Valentine’s Day, we are deep into the month of love, and many of us are probably celebrating the day with everything red and pink with a hint of blue. Don’t come at me with color politics, because the prototype is set, and this is one day where it is not harming anybody. If there is something that is harming anything around us, it is the loneliness of not having a partner on a day you are supposed to celebrate them. Being single is tough, and what is even tougher is watching everyone celebrate around you. So the single clan, we are here with you and not leaving your side on this special day.
Listicles on the internet have suggested everything from gifts to movies, to songs to pick up lines, to the best proposal ideas. But what about the singles? Who’s going to suggest something? Well, we did suggest some anti-Valentine movies a couple of days back and you can read it here. But today we had a change of heart, or at least the writer who wrote this. So he decided to not let you hate the day but fall in love with the place where you are in your life. So I will be suggesting films to watch this Valentine’s Day that don’t exactly promote being single but tell you how to make it worthwhile.
These are characters like us, hopeless in love but broken, surrounded by responsibilities, and some even ditched and now finding life. So go order your favorite meal from that restaurant you have been wanting to eat from for months. Set up the house, turn off the lights, and let these movies consume you and feel good about being single. Below is a list of seven movies, a mix of Hollywood and Bollywood.

Single by choice and single due to family are two things that are so interlinked that one cannot really describe them as two separate entities. Piku is single because her father needs her, but that doesn’t mean she is without a partner, but does she love him, well, that’s complicated. Shoojit Sircar wrote Piku and changed so many things for Indian cinema. The movie that spoke about being single out of choice in the most palatable and relatable way. The movie is heartwarming, moving, and feels like home.
Cast: Greta Gerwig, Adam Driver, Mickey Sumner, and ensemble.
Director: Noah Baumbach.
Streaming On: NA.
I know there is a love story in the corner of this movie, but I would suggest you look at the center. Even when single, there are friends around us to hold us and walk with us to the destination. Frances Ha starring Greta Gerwig and directed by her husband Noah Baumbach is exactly about that bond. That friendship can help you rise above everything and cross every hurdle in the way. A movie shot in black and white is an idea to a bond that asks nothing in return and one that must be treasured. Maybe plan a friend’s date with your pal if they are single and watch this one.
Cast: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, and ensemble.
Director: James Gunn.
Streaming On: Disney+ Hotstar.
What? A superhero movie? Well, look at Guardians Of The Galaxy (all three volumes), when was the last time you saw these many lover boys uniting to form a team to save the galaxy? Vol 3 even made our Rocket a man with a beating heart and a tragic story. But even with loving women to look up to, they are all in a way very much single. James Gunn wrote a three-dimensional movie with this one that transcends genres and perspectives as only a few movies can.
Cast: Kangana Ranaut, Rajkummar Rao, Lisa Haydon, and ensemble.
Director: Vikas Bahl.
Streaming On: Netflix.
The ones dejected in love, unite. Queen is one of the most precious movies to have ever come out of the Hindi film industry. Why is a woman supposed to grieve a man’s decision to be a coward? When her groom calls off their marriage, the girl decides to go on the honeymoon alone for which the tickets have been booked already. Queen is a winner in all departments and is an experience better witnessed than read about. Vikas Bahl’s finest so far, the movie has a separate fan base.
Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Timothee Chalamet, Laurie Metcalf, and ensemble.
Director: Greta Gerwig.
Streaming On: Amazon Prime Video.
Encapsulating the entire crux of this write-up is Lady Bird. Through the eyes of a young lady, the movie explores the theme of wanting to be at a certain point in life by fantasizing about it and burdening the present. Greta Gerwig has been busy working round the clock for the singles and restless and we didn’t even know. Lady Bird is a coming-of-age drama that is quintessentially not just about the age shown in the movie but very much for all. The thirst for a place we are not in whole running the one where we are is exactly what we do at such times. Gerwig advises us to stop and when Greta says anything, we listen.
Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Konkona Sen Sharma, Anupam Kher, Supriya Pathak, and Ensemble.
Director: Ayan Mukerji.
Streaming On: Netflix.
Where do the aimless boys with no future in sight go? Ask Sid who found his motivation in a woman but was also on a journey of his own. Wake Up Sid feels like a biopic for many of us who have been clueless about our careers at some point in our lives. If you weren’t, watch this film to know what it feels like to be on this side. What is left to be written about this heartfelt movie that already isn’t, but for the coming of age and a relatable one, you must tune in.
Cast: Imran Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Ratna Pathak Shah, and ensemble.
Director: Shakun Batra.
Streaming On: Netflix.
Shakun Batra made one of the most interesting films about our times and the fickle nature of modern relationships. One of the most underrated Hindi films, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is about two people who accidentally get married and are now trying to run away from it. Running away from the set-up life has thrown them in is not so easy and the story turns out to be an entertainer. This isn’t exactly about the singles, nor is it about the ones dating, it is somewhere in between and many of us are there for sure. This one is for all of you, I see you!
