Upendra on UI: Every visual of UI tells a story and what one understands depends on each individual, reckons actor-filmmaker Upendra

Ever since he began promoting his upcoming release UI, Real Star Upendra has often said that the film is rich in metaphors. Every visual in the film tells a story and is designed to make audiences think. For instance, he says that his film is set in a fictional world, in which there are people of many races, who are dressed differently. There is a reason to, say, a person being dressed a certain way in the film, which audiences may decode differently.
There are social, economic, religious, psychological and political metaphors in the film, some of which, the filmmaker says, may escape even the most ardent viewer. But that’s okay, he reckons. In fact, even if audiences prefer to not put on their thinking caps, UI will be an enjoyable commercial film, he says.
The attempt, says Upendra, has been to ensure that his film is for all audience and, hence, there is action, comedy, songs, etc., wherein he is also spoon-feeding them to understand the basic plot of what he’s brought to the screen. “What each person makes of the multiple layers within the screenplay is left to the viewing audience. But I assure that everyone will understand my film,” Upendra said in an interaction with social media influencers in Hyderabad.
Having said that, Upendra adds that getting people to think and voice their opinion is the primary objective of the film. “A filmmaker should never dumb down the intelligence of an audience; they are always many steps ahead, in fact. If you do something new and interesting, they will be engaged,” he said. So, has he set up UI for a sequel, just as he did with Upendra and Uppi 2? “That is left to audiences. If they think this story deserves a sequel, I will definitely do it,” he added.
UI, which also stars Reeshma Nanaiah, Sadhu Kokila, Nidhi Subbaiah, late Guruprasad, among others, is releasing worldwide on December 20. Bookings for the film have opened in Karnataka and in the Telugu states, where the response has been phenomenal.
