Jarrel Jherome plays Anthony Robles a differently-abled American wrestler who won the 2011 NCAA individual wrestling national championship in the 125-pound weight class, amid able-bodied athletes. Robles was born with only one leg and refused to wear a prosthetic from a very young age.
How he overcame all the odds, with the support and help of his mother and coaches, and used his strengths to his advantage in wrestling and get a spot on the Arizona State Wrestling team is the focal point of Robles 2012 book, Unstoppable: From Underdog to Undefeated: How I Became a Champion, which has been adapted for the screen by actor-filmmaker Ben Affleck.
Academy Award winning editor William Goldenberg makes his directorial debut with the film, Unstoppable, backed by Affleck and Matt Damon‘s production company Artists Equity. Also with production credits are Robles, David Crockett, Andy Fraser, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Gary Lewis. Eric Champnella, Alex Harris and John Hindman adapted Robles’ book for the screen and the film has now been given a release date. The biographical sports drama Unstoppable will drop on Amazon Prime Video on January 16, 2025.
Jennifer Lopez plays Robles mother Judy, while the cast also includes Bobby Cannavale, Michael Pena, Don Cheadle, Shawn Hatosy, Chimechi Oparanozie, Parker Sack, Jordan Wallace, Benjamin Barrett, Corey Jentzen and Shane Sparks. In the film’s trailer, Jherome, as Robles, is seen telling his school coach, ““When people look at me, the first thing they see is what’s missing. If I win, having one leg won’t be the most important thing about me.”
Lopez, as his mother, Judy, gives him a pep talk, saying, “You make people believe in something. When they see you, they don’t see someone who’s missing a leg. They see someone who is unstoppable.” Unstoppable is getting a limited theatrical release on December 6.
