Unni Mukundan’s Malikappuram continues its box office run and now, according to the actor and sources from the team, the movie has already crossed Rs 100 crore in worldwide box office gross. While the figures could be exaggerated here, there’s no doubt that the film is a runaway success this year, considering its budget of just Rs 3.5 crore.
Unni took to his social media page on Wednesday to share a poster, claiming that the movie has made it to the Rs 100 crore club, along with thanking the audience. “Thank you so much to all family audiences and kids for your love and support towards our movie. Thank you Ayyappa,” wrote the actor, also extending his gratitude to the entire team of the film, helmed by Vishnu Sasi Shankar and scripted by Abhilash Pillai.
The movie was released in theatres on December 30 and has been having a steady run for the past month. The film, which also stars Manoj K Jayan, Sampath Ram, Ramesh Pisharody, Sreejith Ravi, TG Ravi, Saiju Kurup and Renji Panicker, revolves around an 8-year-old girl named Kalyani (Devanandha) who decides to visit Sabarimala with just her classmate and neighbour Piyush (Sripath) for company. Unni plays a stranger who joins the two children and helps them fulfil their wish of visiting the temple.
Malikappuram’s success has been welcomed with open arms by theatre exhibitors too. Unni, in an earlier interview with us, said, “Theatres in Kerala have started to support Malikappuram because it’s bringing families back to cinema halls.” The movie also had a Tamil and Telugu release last week, but couldn’t fetch good numbers despite the three States having a large number of Ayyappa devotees.
Meanwhile, the film’s OTT rights have been bagged by Disney+ Hotstar, which is set to begin streaming Malikappuram on the platform in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi within the next fortnight.
