Before becoming one of the top stars in the Kannada film industry, Upendra made his mark as a firebrand director. His movies were outright provocative and he never shied away from discussing the touchy and controversial topics of our culture, creating a new sub-genre in the Kannada film industry. The first look teaser of the upcoming movie UI suggests that Upendra is returning to its directorial roots, bringing back his fiery storytelling skills to the fore.

Kannada superstar Sudeep unveiled the teaser which gives a glimpse into a world seemingly suspended between the dystopian and utopian. It's not entirely dark nor it's full of rainbows and sunshine. The teaser begins with a voice-over inviting the viewers, "It's not an AI world, but a UI world." And it goes back to the very original sin, a Biblical concept involving Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. It's believed that Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit from the tree of Knowledge, which in turn led to the birth of sin and suffering in the world. Cut to the highly advanced world filled with humans, weapons and injustice. We see the tyrants in regal outfits, non-stop wars, enslaving of people, prisons, hunger and countless sufferings. Enter, the mythical figure, dressed in black robes and riding a dark horse with horns, wielding a sword of justice to deliver people from the clutches of ruthless tyrants. Or so we think.

In Upendra's movies, you can never guess anything. He has a tendency to surprise us and remind us of the role we play in exacerbating local and global problems.

In addition to playing the enigmatic saviour in UI, Upendra has also written and directed it. He has returned to direction after a gap of more than seven years. His last directorial outing was Uppi 2 in 2016.
