Germany kickstarted the 17th UEFA European Championship 2024 with a dream win against Scotland with a perfect score of 5-1 on June 15 at Allianz Arena, Munich. The opening match between these two countries looked clearly a one-sided one as Germany scored their first three goals in the first half and did not, for one, let the Scots breathe easily throughout the match.
Two youngsters Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala scored two goals within the 20 minutes of the game. Kai Havertz’s clean penalty gave the Germans a lead of 3-0 by the end of the first half. Scotland lost Ryan Porteous who was shown a red card after tackling İlkay Gündoğan.
Julian Nagelsmann's side continued to build pressure on Scotland in the second half as well. Their fourth goal came in the 68th minute from the fresh player Niclas Fullkrug. Antonio Rüdiger’s self-goal helped Scotland save some dignity. However, Emre Can did not take time to settle the score at 5-1.
Germany – one of the major powerhouses in world football – maintained a low-key reputation because of their irreversible bad performance since their last World Cup win in 2014. Ever since they failed to make their way to the knockout round in the 2018 and 2022 World Cup. In 2016, Germany lost to France in the semi-final. In 2020, they were defeated in the knockout stage. Undoubtedly, the beginning of the UEFA European Championship 2024 was perfect. Will the German start dreaming of a big win? Only time will tell.
In India, the month-long tournament will be available to watch on TV on Sony Sports Network. On the other hand, the matches will be live streamed on SonyLiv and one can watch it on OTTplay Premium.
