Spain's National Football Team, also lovingly called La Furia Roja (The Red Fury), surely did not enter the UEFA European Championship 2024 as ‘the favourite’ of all. Two matches on and Alvaro Morata’s boys are shining bright as one of the top contenders of the cup. In the wee hours of Friday, Lamine Yamal, Morata, Nico Williams, and others destroyed defending champion Italy’s legendary defense and set the score at 1-0.
Spain enters the second round of the UEFA European Championship 2024
Along with Germany from Group A, Spain (from Group B) entered the knockout round with Riccardo Calafiori's own goal, which came to defend Morata’s stupendous header. Group B was termed as the ‘group of death’ with defending champion Italy, world-ranked 10th Croatia, and former world champion Spain, along with Albania, fighting for the top two positions in the group. With Croatia decimated and Italy losing with La Furia Roja, Morata’s Red Army marched into the second round. With Nico and Yamal speeding up both sides, the team is looking delectably ready for some more big matches this season.
Spain started with a bang as they destroyed Croatia 3-0. According to football experts, this is a rebooted Spain after their catastrophic exit from the Qatar World Cup. After winning two UEFA European Championship trophies in 2008 and 2012, and lifting the World Cup in 2010, Spain’s stats were crucially unimpressive. In 2020, it reached the UEFA European Championship’s semifinal. Apart from this, they made inglorious exits in the knockout stages of World Cups, as well as the Euros.
Yamal and Nico Williams set the bar high for Spain
The scene started changing with their new manager Luis de la Fuente, who took over in 2022. In 2023, Spain bagged the Nations League title. All eyes are on Spain’s two young wingers – Nico and Yamal. While Yamal’s splendid performance against Croatia made him Man Of The Match, this time, Nico Williams flaunted his skills. In another couple of days, Spain will take on Albania before they get into the knockout stage.
