Thalapathy Vijay's Varisu is all set to hit screens on the occasion of Pongal 2023. The latest we hear is that Udhayanidhi Stalin's Red Giant Movies will be distributing the film in Chennai, Coimbatore, Chengalpet, South and North Arcot. The rest of the Tamil Nadu release will be handled by Seven Screen Studios. Taking to its official social media handle, Seven Screen Studios wrote, "We are making this a memorable #VarisuPongal for you! Happy to announce our TN Distributors of #Thalapathy @actorvijay Sir's #Varisu @SVC_official @directorvamshi @iamRashmika @MusicThaman @RedGiantMovies_ @Jagadishbliss (sic)."
Interestingly, Udhayanidhi Stalin's production house will be distributing Ajith's Thunivu as well during Pongal and it was earlier stated that more screens were allotted for Ajith's film. It's been almost a decade since both the stars had a simultaneous release at the box office (The last time they clashed with each other was in 2014 when Ajith's Veeram and Vijay's Jilla released). Varisu had faced yet another hurdle when the Telugu Film Producers Association released a statement that original Telugu films should be given priority during Sankranthi.
In the meantime, Dil Raju, who had bankrolled Varisu, courted controversy, when he stated that Vijay is a bigger star than Ajith and hence, more screens should be allotted to him. This led to huge backlash from Ajith fans who have stated that the producer was making unwarranted comments leading to fan war.
Varisu, directed by Vamshi Paidipally, is a bilingual (Varasudu in Telugu). The film has Rashmika Mandanna as the leading lady and has an ensemble cast which includes Vijay, Rashmika Mandanna, R Sarathkumar, Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Shaam, Srikanth, Khushbu, Yogi Babu, Jayasudha, Sangeetha Krish, Samyuktha Shanmughanathan, Nandini Rai, Ganesh Venkatraman, Sriman, VT Ganesan, John Vijay, Bharath Reddy, Sanjana and others. Music is by Thaman, marking his maiden venture with Vijay.
