Turbo, the action-comedy film which features Mammootty in the lead role, had a massive global release on May 23, 2024. The movie, which is helmed by hitmaker Vysakh, is off to an excellent start at the box office, despite receiving mixed reviews from the critics. Interestingly, the makers of Turbo are already planning a sequel to the Mammootty starrer, which is on its way to earning blockbuster status. Along with the megastar, another Malayalam superstar is expected to join the franchise, in the second part.
*Mild spoilers ahead*
For the unversed, the action-comedy film, which marked the reunion of Mammootty and director Vysakh hints that a sequel is on the cards, in its end credits. Turbo ends by opening the possibilities of a new cinematic universe, which not just includes the films of the megastar, but also projects involving other leading stars of the Malayalam film industry. Now, the recent updates suggest that the second part of the film is indeed happening. If things go as planned, Turbo 2 might go on floors after director Vysakh wraps up his next outing Khalifa, which stars Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead role. The project is expected to start rolling by the end of 2024.

Some unconfirmed reports suggest that not just Mammootty, but another leading superstar of the Malayalam film industry is also set to join the Turbo franchise, with the upcoming second part. The rumourmills suggest that Mohanlal is in talks to play the lead role in the film, along with the megastar. In that case, the highly anticipated project might mark the reunion of Malayalam cinema’s ‘Big M’s after a very long gap. However, there is no official confirmation on the same, yet.
However, the netizens are not ready to believe the Turbo tail end yet, as Vysakh’s previous blockbuster Madhura Raja also had a similar ending that hinted at the possibilities of a sequel. However, the third part of the ‘Raja’ franchise, which was titled Minister Raja, never materialised. So, the cine-goers suggest that it is too early to anticipate Turbo Jose’s return to the big screens.
