This year saw the release of Ishana Night Shyamalan's directorial debut, The Watchers, and her sister Saleka's Trap. Indeed, the shot of Trap features a poster for The Watchers.
Hartnett was willing to risk everything with Shyamalan to make his thriller Trap, which he described as his "ideal choice" for the lead role of Cooper. With 2015's The Visit, the filmmaker took a risk by self-financing his film, and the gamble paid off on the first day of release.
Earlier, Shyamalan told GQ that he was totally defenseless. If everything works out, they will all get their money. If it doesn't, they will all lose it. He really doesn't think one should. The filmmaker explained that he had envisioned Cooper as a superstar in the part, but that he needed an actor who could work without the support of a studio in order to cast him.
Shyamalan and Hartnett hit it off right away because they both reside outside of Hollywood and have three daughters. Upon hearing the actor say danger is what really drives him, the filmmaker was ecstatic.
Meanwhile, in contrast to the early days of Shyamalan's career, when the surprise for the third act was secretly stored in an impenetrable vault alongside the Coca-Cola recipe, the trailer for Trap seems to reveal the major twist.
When the concept came to him, it was obvious for him. The movie's appeal lies in this scene, which encourages the viewer to put themselves in their shoes. Put simply, he wants the viewer to feel what it's like to be Hartnett as the noose tightens around his neck.
In less than a decade, Shyamalan has directed six films, the most recent being Trap. During this time, he experimented with found-footage horror comedy in The Visit, returned to the Unbreakable" universe in Split and Glass, and adapted both graphic novels (Old) and novels (Knock at the Cabin). He was also actively involved with the television series Servant and Wayward Pines around that time.
