Tovino Thomas’ Thallumaala continued its box office onslaught for the third week running with the movie playing in 164 theatres in Kerala, and giving tough competition to this week’s releases including Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Theerppu and Vijay Deverakonda’s Liger.

The movie, which is already Tovino’s highest-grossing film so far, had crossed Rs 25 crore gross in its first week itself and is on track to cross Rs 50 crore, according to trade analysts. The big budget movie, which also has Kalyani Priyadarshan, Shine Tom Chacko and Lukman Avaran, released along with Kunchacko Boban’s Nna Thaan Case Kodu. What’s heartening for theatre exhibitors is that both the movies are doing well at the box office.

This, however, has posed a handicap for this week’s releases such as Jeo Baby’s Sree Dhanya Catering Service, Joju George’s Peace and Vishnu Govind’s Attention Please – all of which only got limited release. Bigger films such as Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Theerppu and Vijay Deverakonda’s Liger were declared washouts within days of its release, with negative reviews of the film also prompting viewers to stay away from theatres.

In a recent interview with OTTplay, Tovino also defended the film against critic comments that said that the film didn’t have much depth. “I heard a lot of people say that Thallumaala didn’t have a story. But it has and that’s the reason the movie became enjoyable. In fact, it has more depth than what we have shown onscreen and that’s something I believe that the audience can guess and understand. If you say that it didn't have any emotions, how can you explain that kind of reaction that the climax sequence got in theatres that I had visited,” he said.

Tovino’s Thallumaala, meanwhile, is expected to benefit from this for another week. Upcoming releases include Kunchacko Boban’s Ottu and Basil Joseph’s Palthu Janwar – both of which will release on September 2. Other Onam releases including Prithviraj and Nayanthara’s Gold, Siju Wilson’s Pathonpathaam Noottaandu and Biju Menon’s Oru Thekkan Thallu Case, which will be releasing on September 8.
