It’s been four years since filmmaker-actor Basil Joseph was last in the director’s chair. He has, in the interim, been enthralling audiences with his films as an actor, whether it is Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey, Kadina Kadoramee Andakadaham , Guruvayur Ambalanadayil, Sookshmadarshini, Pravinkoodu Shappu, PonMan, and the more recent Maranamass, which is currently in theatres.
Every now and then, there are rumours about Basil returning to direction, none of which he has confirmed, but he has hinted that when he does his next as a filmmaker, it will be a big project, given that there are high expectations of him following his last, Minnal Murali, which had come directly on Netflix.
Maranamass has been produced by Tovino Thomas, the leading man of Minnal Murali, who is a close pal of Basil. The Empuraan actor was asked recently if he missed seeing Basil as a filmmaker and he replied that this is something that Basil and he have discussed.
“I miss Basil the director, but Basil misses him more, which I have realized. As an actor, Basil has been doing his job really well. Looking at this trajectory as a friend, member of the audience or even producer, I see highly satisfying acting performances on his part. Having said that, what I have gathered from our conversations is that he gets a much bigger high in being a director than an actor,” said Tovino.
In fact, Tovino’s suggestion to Basil has been to make at least one film every 3 years, but to not give up acting in the interim. Basil then chimed in that he is busy with the writing process of what will, hopefully, be his next directorial. It has been widely reported that the actor-filmmaker is likely to head to Bollywood with a pan-Indian subject, which he has not confirmed.
