Asin Thottumkal, who had a little over a decade-long tryst with cinema, made her mark across multiple industries before deciding to give up films post-marriage. As the actress celebrates her birthday today, there’s no time better than now to revisit some of her finest films (in Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil) and performances over the years.
Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi
Aren’t debuts always special? Asin may have forayed into the film industry with the Malayalam film Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka, but her Telugu film debut, Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi, a runaway success, was a game changer in her career. Her enthusiastic portrayal of an innocent Tamil girl, paired opposite Ravi Teja, won many hearts. The film makes for good viewing even today.

Gharshana
While the world may be looking down on remakes these days, Gautham Menon did a fabulous job of adapting Kaakha Kaakha for the Telugu audience with Gharshana. The choice of Venkatesh and Asin as the lead pair was apt, and Harris Jayaraj’s music wooed music enthusiasts too. Asin, cast as a school teacher, played her part with the utmost grace and dignity.

Dasavatharam
In the first double role in her career, Asin is cast as an orthodox Brahmin wife and a feisty small-town girl in Dasavathaaram, Kamal Haasan’s magnum opus, directed by KS Ravikumar. She brought enough variety to both performances and held her own in a film comprising a stellar lineup. The dubbed version introduced Asin to Hindi audiences before the release of Ghajini.

Ghajini
Though it’s hard to pick a favourite between Asin’s performance in the Tamil and Hindi versions, we’re going ahead with the latter. Asin’s spirited performance alongside an equally impressive Aamir Khan was backed by her stellar Hindi dialogue delivery, something not many audiences expected from her in the North. And of course, AR Rahman gives another reason to cherish the remake.

Kaavalan
One of the more underrated performances in Asin’s career, Kaavalan truly showcases the depths of her repertoire and her ability to understand drama without compromising on realism. Paired opposite a happy-go-lucky Vijay, the film is the Tamil remake of Bodyguard, directed by Siddique (who also helmed the Hindi remake starring Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor).
