It has been a great year for Telugu cinema, as the standard of filmmaking, technology, and stardom has gone to the next level. The year 2023, in particular, saw some blockbuster and surprise hits. But there are also a few biggies that flopped at the Tollywood box office. Here's a look at Telugu cinema's top ten biggest flops of 2023.
Amigos - 10th Feb, 2023
OTT platform - Netflix
The makers of Pushpa, Mythri Movie Makers, presented this film. Kalyan Ram played a triple role in this film, which is a crime thriller. Despite the promising trailer and stunning performance of Kalyan Ram, Amigos fell flat at the box office and was out in its first week of release. Amigos is now streaming on Netflix.
Ravanasura - 7th April 2023
OTT platform - Amazon Prime Video
After the success of Dhamaka, Ravi Teja teamed up with Sudheer Varma for the crime thriller Ravanasura. Made on a budget of Rs 50 crore, the Ravi Teja starrer made only Rs 20 crore in its full run. The action drama is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Shaakuntalam - 14th April 2023
OTT platform - Amazon Prime Video
Shaakuntalam was Samantha's dream project, as she was headlining a fantasy drama for the first time in her career. Directed by Gunasekhar, Shaakuntalam was made on a budget of Rs 60 crore and only made Rs 19 crore in its full run. The tacky VFX and poor narration ended the film as a huge flop. Shaakuntalam is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Agent - 28th April 2023
OTT platform - Yet to be locked
Agent was the biggest film in Akhil Akkineni's career. Directed by Surender Reddy, this film was in the making for over two years. Akhil made a solid transformation for Agent but the film flopped at the box office. Made on a budget of Rs 85 crore, the film failed to even make Rs 20 crore at the box office. Agent is yet to lock its OTT platform.
Ramabanam - 5th May 2023
OTT platform - Netflix
Gopichand teamed up with his lucky director, Sriwass, who gave him two big hits. But sadly, Ramabanam was an outdated action drama that failed at the box office. Made on a budget of Rs 20 crore, the film failed to even make Rs 13 crore in its full run. The film is now streaming on Netflix
Custody - 12th May 2023
OTT platform - Amazon Prime Video
Custody was a special film in Naga Chaitanya's career, as he teamed up with Tamil director Venkat Prabhu. The cop drama was made on a budget of Rs 45 crore and did not even make Rs 15 crore at the box office. Custody is now streaming on Prime Video.
SPY - 29th June 2023
OTT platform - Amazon Prime Video
After the super success of Karthikeya 2, Nikhil headlined an action drama titled SPY. The film was produced by ED Entertainment and was a flop. The routine SPY theme and boring execution did not impress the audience. SPY is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Tiger Nageswara Rao - 20th October
OTT platform - Amazon Prime Video
Tiger Nageswara Rao was the most expensive film in Ravi Teja's career. The film was produced by Abhishek Aggarwal, who made Kashmir Files. The period drama about a thief was made on a budget of Rs 60 crore and made only Rs 22 crore at the box office. Tiger Nageswara Rao is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Aadikeshava 24th November 2023
OTT platform - Netflix
Aadikeshava was produced on a huge scale by Sithara Entertainments. Vaisshnav Tej and Sreeleela played the main leads in this film, which was made on a budget of Rs 20 crore. The sad part is that the film did not even make Rs 5 crore at the box office and is now streaming on Netflix.
Extra Ordinary Man - 8th December 2023
OTT platform - Netflix
Nithin, who has been going through flops, teamed up with flop director Vakkantam Vamsi for a film titled Extra Ordinary Man. The film produced by Nithin's banner impressed everyone with its promos but flopped due to its silly narration and over-the-top comedy. The digital release date will be out soon.
