Director Rajeev Ravi’s big-budget period drama Thuramukham is all set for its OTT release. The movie, which had wrapped up its principal photography back in 2019, had hit theatres in March 2023 after multiple delays due to the pandemic and financial issues.
The film, which is based on Gopan Chidambaram’s script, has an ensemble cast featuring Nivin Pauly, Joju George, Poornima Indrajith, Arjun Ashokan, Darshana Rajendan, Sudev Nair and Indrajith Sukumaran in pivotal roles.
What is Thuramukham about?
The period film spanning the 1930s to the early 1950s revolves around the evils of the chappa system that was prevalent during the time in Cochin harbour and the proletariat movement to abolish this.
In an earlier interview with OTTplay, the film’s director Rajeev told us that the film looks at the history of Mattancherry, its people and proletarian force. “All of that is interesting. In these times, there’s a tendency to marginalise that community. So, it’s important to tell the history of the people there,” he said, adding the film was also a form of documentation for him.

Thuramukham has Nivin essaying a role of labourer named Moidu, who is more of an anti-hero in the movie. “Moidu is someone who treaded the wrong path. He doesn’t have anyone to please. He just wants to ensure that he brings money home. So, his life has slipped considerably from the morally right path,” said Nivin, in a previous interview with OTTplay.
The idea for the film came after Rajeev and team had organised the play Thuramukham along with the Uru Art Harbour in Kochi back in 2018.
When and where to watch Thuramukham online?
Thuramukham’s OTT rights were bought by Sony LIV, which has announced that the movie will begin streaming on the platform from April 28. Thuramukham will also be available to stream on OTTplay Premium from the same date.
