Thunivu vs Varisu: The much-awaited Pongal clash between films of Ajith and Vijay averted? Here's what we know

Kollywood has been awaiting the clash of titans during the forthcoming Pongal season ever since makers of Ajith and Vijay's movies unofficially confirmed that the two films will be released on the same day. January 12 was considered as the release date, though there wasn't any official announcement on the date from team Thunivu.

However, many theatres abroad started advance ticket sales based on the assumption that the two projects will lock horns on the same date. Even after Thunivu was censored the other day, makers refused to come up with an update on the same.

Quite surprisingly, a few inside sources said that there is a possibility for the Ajith-starrer to arrive one day earlier. This has led to fan wars between admirers of both the stars. It looks like Thunivu, helmed by H Vinoth, is likely to be released on January 11.

A couple of exhibitors, too, took to their social media handles to raise doubt over the uncertainty of the film's release date. It is perhaps for the first time in Kollywood that makers of a big ticket flick are yet to make a release date announcement when the tentative date is just a week away.  

The trade pundits of Tamil film industry have been waiting to know whose movie would lead at the box office as the stars were heading for a clash after nine years. But the sudden change in plans from team Thunivu is likely to disappoint many. While fans of Ajith are elated over the fact that Thunivu will have an upper hand in terms of numbers on day one, Vijay admirers are dejected over the sudden twist.

Having said that, many film buffs are still hoping to witness a clash between the two stars. Ajith's films had clashes with movies of Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and Vijay in the last decade.
