Thunivu vs Varisu: The clash is on! Makers of Vijay-starrer family drama announce release date

The box office clash between Ajith's Thunivu and Vijay's Varisu was confirmed a while ago, and it was assumed that both the films would hit the screens on January 12. The makers of the latter made an official announcement, too, a few weeks ago. 

All eyes were on the makers of Thunivu. Even after the movie's trailer was released and got censored, the team chose to leave fans guessing. Meanwhile, there were speculation doing the rounds that the project could prepone its release by a day. After Varisu's trailer was unveiled yesterday, team Thunivu made it clear that they are arriving on January 11.

Needless to say, the twist made everyone look forward to the decision of team Varisu. They, too, officially announced January 11 as its release date, leaving cinephiles elated. Till a couple of days ago, it was heard that the much-awaited clash was averted owing to team Thunivu releasing the movie a day ahead.

But little did many expect that Varisu would join the fray as they had already made their release date official. Now, the pressure is on exhibitors and distributors. With less than a week away for this decade's biggest box office clash in Kollywood, fans and the trade have already started predicting the numbers.

Tegimpu and Vaarasudu, the Telugu versions of Thunivu and Varisu respectively, too, are expected to hit the screens on the same day. Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have bagged the digital rights of the films respectively. 

H Vinoth has helmed Thunivu which has been bankrolled by Boney Kapoor. Varisu, directed by Vamshi Paidipally, has been produced by Dil Raju.
