During the pandemic, Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow made her final appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the film received a lukewarm response, with many feeling that the character deserved a better send-off. The drama escalated when Johansson entered a legal battle with Disney over the breach of her contract regarding the film's release format. After the dispute was resolved, discussions of a secret project involving Johansson began. While there was little buzz initially, her name has resurfaced, thanks to the release of the Thunderbolts teaser trailer, where Johansson is credited as an executive producer.

Scarlett Johansson’s Secret MCU Project

In case you need a refresher, after Johansson’s legal dispute with Disney, which revolved around the simultaneous release of Black Widow in theaters and on streaming, Kevin Feige and Scarlett Johansson confirmed that she was working on a secret MCU project. It was made clear that she wouldn’t be returning as Black Widow, and her involvement would be behind the scenes. Now, it seems that this secret project is likely Thunderbolts. Read on for more details.

Thunderbolts is directed by Jake Schreier and executive produced by Louis D'Esposito, Brian Chapek, Jason Tamez, and Scarlett Johansson (formerly Black Widow). The screenplay is written by Eric Pearson (Thor: Ragnarok, Black Widow), Lee Sung Jin (Beef), and Joanna Calo (The Bear). The film is slated to hit theaters on May 2, 2025. The teaser trailer for the film has just been released.

This raises speculation about the possibility of a Black Widow cameo in Thunderbolts, especially if the Multiverse is involved. However, fans should temper their expectations. Thunderbolts has been in development for some time. It was initially announced in 2022 and was scheduled for release in 2023, but delays have pushed the film to its current May 2025 release date.

About Thunderbolts

The official synopsis for the film featuring Florence Pugh’s character reads, "Thunderbolts is about an irreverent team-up featuring depressed assassin Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) alongside the MCU’s least anticipated band of misfits." The movie also sees the return of familiar MCU characters such as Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), along with some new faces.

Thunderbolts is set for a big-screen release on May 2, 2025. Stay tuned to OTTplay for updates on this and other news from the world of streaming and films.
