Director Mani Ratnam's upcoming movie Thug Life seems to have hit the fast track, following some delay. The production of the movie is set to gain further speed with Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan joining the shooting on Wednesday.
The ongoing Lok Sabha campaigning had kept Kamal from starting shooting for Thug Life. Even though he is not contesting in elections from his political party Makkal Needhi Maiam, he has been actively campaigning for the DMK and its allies in Tamil Nadu.
Last week, Tamil Nadu voted in the first phase of the seven-phase Parliament elections, feeding Kamal Haasan from electioneering. He will now shift focus to his films. Kamal has a slew of big-budget films in different stages of production, including Thug Life.
Thug Life is a special film for Tamil cinema fans as it marks Kamal's reunion with Mani Ratnam after a gap of more than 37 years. The iconic actor-director duo's last movie was Nayakan, which came out in 1987. The old classic, heavily inspired by the likes of The Godfather and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, to date remains a landmark film in the history of Indian cinema.
Naturally, the anticipation is very high for Thug Life. The teaser for the movie caught the imagination of the fans with its stylised action sequences, and Kamal's unique avatar. Dressed in rags, Kamal portrays an outlaw set against a dystopian backdrop.
Thug Life also boasts of an all-star cast. Besides Kamal, the movie also stars Trisha, Jayam Ravi and Dulquer Salmaan in key roles. Recently, the filmmakers roped in Simbu for a support role. He also reportedly shot for the film in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. However, an official confirmation of his involvement in Thug Life is awaited.
