Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s film Thug Life is probably the most-awaited collaboration of the year in Indian cinema. The iconic actor-director duo had roped in some of the well-known names of South cinema including Trisha, Dulquer Salmaan and Jayam Ravi. Now, the latest to join forces in the Mani Ratnam directorial is Malayalam actor Joju George and Tamil actor Gautham Karthik. The makers of the film took to their social media handles to announce the new cast members in the post-apocalyptic-themed film.  

Joju Geoge took to his Instagram handle to share the news with the caption, “Dream World”. Meanwhile, Gautham Karthik expressed his excitement in a note that read, “Super excited to be part of this grand venture”.  

Is Thug Life set in a post-apocalyptic era? Teaser reveals an intriguing spectacle

The title announcement teaser for the Mani Ratnam-Kamal Haasan dream project was released earlier. The teaser showcased a gangster-action drama which appears to be taking place in a different era, exuding a post-apocalyptic atmosphere.

The sneak-peek shows Kamal's character introducing himself as ‘Rangarayar Sakthivel Naiker’. Then a battle breaks out, with Kamal Haasan showcasing his martial arts skills as he takes on heavily armed rivals with historic weapons, giving out a post-apocalyptic vibe. 

Thug Life is bankrolled by Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam, R Mahendran and Siva Ananth, under Raaj Kamal Films International, Madras Talkies and Red Giant Movies. The film’s music is scored by AR Rahman. While the camera works are handled by Ravi K Chandran, Sreekar Prasad carries out editing and Vikram-fame stunt choreographer duo Anbarivu will choreograph the stunts.  

Kamal Haasan-Mani Ratnam: A reunion after 36 years

Thug Life, interestingly, marks the reunion of the iconic actor-director duo, 36 years after their last blockbuster film Nayakan. Additionally, the name of the Kamal Haasan’s character, Rangarayar Sakthivel Naiker, is inspired from Kamal-Mani Ratnam’s Nayagan’s lead character’s name Sakthivel ‘Velu’ Naicker. Does the new film have any connection with the 1987 blockbuster? Well, we will have to wait to know that.
