Thor: Love and Thunder is one of the most anticipated movies of the year and is getting closer to its release. Starring Chris Hemsworth as Thor the God of Thunder, the movie will also see Christian Bale essay the role of Gorr the God Butcher, the main villain. Known for his ability to eradicate powerful gods, the character also has an interesting story as to why he does what he does. So before the movie hit theatres in India on July 7, let us look at five things to know about Gorr.
Gorr’s backstory
While Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher is the main antagonist of Thor: Love and Thunder, the character has a tragic backstory in the comics. His hate for the gods started after his home planet suffered from starvation and natural disasters, leading to his family’s death. Enraged that the gods did not help, he takes upon a weapon of a dark god that is enabled by a symbiote, giving him the power to kill gods. He soon sets out on the mission of killing every god he could get his hands on.
Gorr has killed many gods and then enslaved them
Gorr is known as The God Butcher across the universe, a name he earned as he started killing many gods or enslaving them. In the comics, there are at least 18 different gods he has butchered over the years. As Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Russel Crowe’s Zeus appear in the movie, let’s wait and see how things pan out in the MCU adaptation of the comics.
Gorr has created a bomb to wipe out gods across the multiverse
The MCU has been busy setting up the multiverse and this could very much come into play in Thor: Love and Thunder. In the comics, Gorr creates a “Godbomb”, which could wipe out all the gods across the multiverse. With fans already used to the idea of the multiverse, thanks to movies such as Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it would be interesting to see if the “Godbomb” comes into play in Thor 4.
Gorr goes rogues just like Wanda Maximoff
According to the comics, the downfall of the God Butcher happens after he goes rogue and starts creating apparitions of his family while creating the Godbomb. He is then taken down by these apparitions as he gives into his grief. This storyline would be similar to MCU fans, who have seen it happen to Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in WandaVision.
Gorr had made Thor unworthy of the Mjolnir
What’s a good Thor movie without some Mjolnir drama? In the comics, Thor and Gorr are at war for eons before Gorr is killed. Following this, Thor questions the idea of gods and feels he is unworthy of lifting the mighty Mjolnir. The comics that followed this also gave new directions to the Avenger. As we get closer to the release of Thor: Love and Thunder, it will be interesting to see if the MCU also has a new path set for Thor after the movie.
