It’s not often that you can pick between two new films featuring Mammootty and Dulquer Salmaan to watch on the same day. But the final weekend of September 2023 will leave the fans of two Malayalam superstars spoilt for choice as two of their bigger films will release on the same day, albeit on different platforms.
While Mammootty’s much-awaited Kannur Squad is currently slated to hit theatres on September 28, Dulquer’s most expensive film till date – King of Kotha – is scheduled to drop on Disney+ Hotstar on the same date.

King of Kotha, which hit theatres on August 24 as an Onam release, raked in over Rs 40 crore from worldwide box office . The gangster-actioner, which is set in the ‘80s and ‘90s, is helmed by veteran filmmaker Joshiy’s son Abhilash and also featured Aishwarya Lekshmi, Chemban Vinod Jose, Shabeer Kalarakkal, Gokul Suresh and Prasanna in pivotal roles.
The film’s OTT rights were snapped up by Disney+ Hotstar at a record price, even before its theatrical release. Sources from the platform informed OTTplay that the movie is scheduled to release in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi on September 28. The platform, however, is yet to officially announce the release date.
Meanwhile, Kannur Squad marks the directorial debut of cinematographer Roby Varghese Raj and is co-scripted by his brother and actor Rony David Raj . The film, which is based on true events, revolves around a group of police officers from Kerala who go on a wild goose chase across the country to track down and apprehend elusive criminals.

Kannur Squad also has Azeez Nedumangad, Sunny Wayne, Rony David Raj and Shabareesh Varma as part of its cast along with Mammootty and Kannada actor Kishore.
